As part of the twice-monthly MA OBAT ECHO® series, David Jernigan, PhD, will review historical injustices around alcohol sale and consumption, explain how alcohol-related injustices continue in the present day, and discuss individual and policy-level interventions to address alcohol-related injustice. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.

This training provides knowledge on xylazine, a CNS depressant, linked to an increasing number of overdose deaths in the US. This describes the physiologic effects of xylazine, manifestations of xylazine intoxication, overdose, communicable infections associated with xylazine use, and wound care for persons injecting xylazine.

We will describe how to use benzodiazepines and antipsychotics to manage psychotic symptoms associated with overamping. Additionally, we will provide a brief overview of medications that may be appropriate to manage hypertensive crisis in the setting of overamping to prevent worse cardiac outcomes.
