Boston Medical Center's (BMC) drop-in series Substance Use Disorder Care Continuum ECHO® (SUD Care Continuum ECHO®) offers training and support in addiction treatment, with a focus on supporting front line addiction treatment workforce. This includes health providers in Acute Treatment Services (ATS), Crisis Stabilization Services (CSS), Transitional Support Services (TSS), Opioid Treatment Programs (OTP), long-term residential program, sober and recovery homes, primary care, and psychiatry. This free, case-based tele-mentoring program is designed to increase the capacity of health care providers to implement high-quality and evidence-based addiction treatment.
Intended audience
Providers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, peer supports, other clinical staff, and non-clinicians.
Speakers
Greg Dorchak (he/him)Greg Dorchak has been working in the Civil Rights Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office since 2015. He received his law degree from Northeastern University and his Ph.D. from UMass Amherst. Greg also teaches disability law at Boston University School of Law.
Objectives
Following this training, participants will have the knowledge to:
- Describe how federal civil rights statutes protect individuals with substance use disorders.
- Explain how to file complaints or raise issues with violations or problematic issues.

Alexis Gallardo Foreman, DNP, MSN, FNP-BC, TTSAlexis is an assistant professor of pulmonology, allergy, sleep and critical care medicine at Boston University's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. She is also Co-Director of Boston Medical Center's Tobacco Dependence Treatment Center.

Gabriel Quaglia, CHWGabriel Quaglia, CHW is a Direct Service Provider Program Coordinator at Support After a Death by Overdose (SADOD). As a A certified community health worker, Gabriel worked since 2016 in service delivery, program development, and training for harm reduction, SUD treatment programs, and peer grief support. As a person in long term recovery, Gabriel has worked for over twelve years in advocacy and direct action with people who use drugs and people experiencing homelessness as well as labor organizing. Currently they are working for SADOD delivering groups for direct service providers (DSP) experiencing grief and loss as well as offering training and technical assistance relevant to DSP support.
Jill Shanahan (she/her)Jill Shanahan (she/her) spent many years in harm reduction working in drop in centers & needle exchange programs. She is currently a facilitator and educator working for Support After Death by Overdose (SADOD), helping build peer grief support for workers in the overdose crisis throughout MA. Jill is a member of the MA Harm Reduction Advisory Council and has a BA in Sociology from Umass Dartmouth. She has completed a 300hr YTT and is a Reiki Master. She is forever grateful to those who came before us in peer led movements such as harm reduction and peer grief work. She also deeply acknowledges the many forms of teachers she has been gifted on this journey.

- Understand the increase in and the potential sources of grief for service providers.
- Describe the potential ways grief can manifest.
- Utilize techniques to help process and deal with grief individually and collectively.

Glee has specialized in the last 15 years in supporting individuals with co-occurring disorders across various presentations and clinical settings. Glee holds a Master of Social Work from Simmons University, where she received advanced training in medical social work and addiction medicine. In recent years, she has focused on gambling addiction and contributed to capacity-building initiatives for behavioral health professionals in the Commonwealth. Her work emphasizes bridging gaps in care and supporting individuals facing addiction challenges.

Alyssa Peterkin, MD (she/her)Dr. Peterkin received her medical degree from New York Medical College, completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, and is board-certified in internal and addiction medicine. She completed the Grayken Addiction Medicine Fellowship and is passionate about addiction education and improving access to substance use disorder treatment. Currently, she holds the position of Program Director for the Grayken Addiction Medicine Fellowship and serves as Co-Director of the Addiction and Health Track at Boston University School of Medicine.

Boston Medical Center's (BMC) drop-in series Substance Use Disorder Care Continuum ECHO® (SUD Care Continuum ECHO®) offers training and support in addiction treatment, with a focus on supporting front line addiction treatment workforce. This includes health providers in Acute Treatment Services (ATS), Crisis Stabilization Services (CSS), Transitional Support Services (TSS), Opioid Treatment Programs (OTP), long-term residential program, sober and recovery homes, primary care, and psychiatry. This free, case-based tele-mentoring program is designed to increase the capacity of health care providers to implement high-quality and evidence-based addiction treatment.

Providers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, peer supports, other clinical staff, and non-clinicians.
Speakers
Daniel P. Alford, MD, MPH (he/him)Daniel P. Alford, MD, MPH, is a board-certified primary care physician at Boston Medical Center (BMC), where he specializes in managing opioid use disorders and safer opioid prescribing. He is also a professor of medicine and associate dean of continuing medical education at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and the director of the Clinical Addiction Research and Education (CARE) Unit at BMC. Dr. Alford has been recognized as a Champion of Change by the White House and has received the American Medical Association’s Award for Health Education, among other honors.
Emily Hurstak, MD, MPH (she/her)Dr. Emily Hurstak is the medical director of Boston Medical Center's Office Based Addiction Clinic (OBAT) and Grayken Center for Addiction TTA's SUD Care Continuum ECHO®. She is a primary care physician and addiction medicine specialist who provides primary medical care to patients at Boston Medical Center's General Internal Medicine and OBAT clinics. Dr. Hurstak has focused her work and research on improving the understanding and care of patients with co-morbid substance use disorders and chronic pain as well as studying health literacy and health communication techniques to improve care of vulnerable patients. She is board certified in internal medicine and addiction medicine and is trained in medical acupuncture. Dr. Hurstak received her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Columbia University and completed her residency, chief residency, and fellowship at the University of California San Francisco.
Objectives
Following this training, participants will have the knowledge to:
- Describe the prevalence of chronic pain among patients with substance use disorders (SUD).
- Describe how chronic pain impacts recovery outcomes.
- Learn about novel methods to improve pain care for patients with SUD.

Daniel Rodrigues, LICSW, PMH-CDaniel Rodrigues is the Director of Substance Use Disorder and Outreach Programs at Duffy Health Center located in Hyannis. Daniel’s background is as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, graduating from Smith School for Social Work in 2013. Daniel has worked in the field of substance use disorders and mental health since graduation, having worked in inpatient co-occurring treatment, outpatient residential, and hospital based Social Work on Maternity and Pediatrics, before transitioning to his current role at Duffy Health Center. In his role at Duffy, Daniel provides clinical oversight for all of the health center’s substance use disorder services, and outreach programs, as well as the center's winter weather response program.
Objectives
Following this training, participants will have the knowledge to:
- Identify the social determinants of health that impact people experiencing homelessness (PEH) and their ability to seek SUD care.
- Describe the importance of low-threshold treatment for people experiencing homelessness.
- Recall alternative approaches to serving people experiencing homelessness who are experiencing SUD, outside of the OBAT setting.
