This course educates physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants on prescribing buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder, with particular attention to the treatment of women during pregnancy and postpartum.

This eight-hour course prepares physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants to prescribe buprenorphine to treat opioid use disorder in their office, with a focus on the treatment of pregnant and postpartum women. The curriculum includes the science of addiction as a brain disorder, the pharmacology of buprenorphine, and the regulatory requirements around prescribing this medication. In addition to addressing the management of buprenorphine treatment in the general population, particular attention will be devoted to the special considerations involved in treating opioid use disorder during pregnancy. Attendees will learn to screen patients for treatment with buprenorphine and to manage the medication along with the patient's other medical needs in an office setting such as a primary care clinic. The course fulfills 8 hours of the training needed to obtain a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine. The Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA 2000) requires physicians to complete 8 hours of approved training in order to be eligible for a waiver, and nurse practitioners and physician assistants to complete 24 hours. Check-in for the course will be from 8:00 am to 8:30 am and the training will run from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Parking is available for free at Lowell Hospital. Please use the upper 2 floors of the parking garage and carpool when possible to conserve parking space for hospital patients and visitors. This is an in-person training. There will not be an option to attend via webinar.

Upon completion of this training, the participants will (be able to): Have the training required to apply for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine to their patients with opioid dependence (addiction), Identify and assess patients who are appropriate for treatment with buprenorphine, Have the specific knowledge concerning the use of buprenorphine to manage opioid dependence in the outpatient setting, Discuss the psychiatric and medical co-morbidities associated with opioid addiction.

Boston Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by American Nurses Association, Massachusetts, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. AMA Credit Designation Statement American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 8 (eight) AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
