As part of the twice-monthly SUD Care Continuum ECHO® series, Brooke G. Rogers, PhD, MPH, will discuss addressing complex health, identity and social factors in the treatment of substance use disorders. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.
Boston Medical Center's (BMC) drop-in series Substance Use Disorder Care Continuum ECHO® (SUD Care Continuum ECHO®) offers training and support in addiction treatment, with a focus on supporting front line addiction treatment workforce. This includes health providers in Acute Treatment Services (ATS), Crisis Stabilization Services (CSS), Transitional Support Services (TSS), Opioid Treatment Programs (OTP), long-term residential program, sober and recovery homes, primary care, and psychiatry. This free, case-based tele-mentoring program is designed to increase the capacity of health care providers to implement high-quality and evidence-based addiction treatment.
Intended audience
Providers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, peer supports, other clinical staff, and non-clinicians.
Speakers
Brooke G. Rogers, PhD, MPHDr. Rogers is a licensed psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at Boston Medical Center, Director of Psychological Services for Addiction, and Clinical Associate Professor at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Dr. Rogers sees patients within the Addiction Psychiatry Treatment Program and Center for Infectious Diseases. Her clinical interests include substance use, health behavior change, and management of chronic illness and research interests include HIV prevention and HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), HIV syndemics, LGBTQ mental health, and implementation of scalable interventions.
Objectives
Following this training, participants will have the knowledge to:
- Define "syndemics populations" as populations affected by multiple marginalized identities.
- Discuss unique considerations for working with syndemics populations and how to approach treatment of substance use disorders in the context of these other factors.

Joji Suzuki, MDDr. Suzuki is the Director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry and Director of Addictions Education in the Department of Psychiatry, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. His areas of clinical and research interests are the assessment and management of substance use disorders and related conditions in general medical settings, motivational interviewing, office-based opioid treatment, implementation of collaborative models of care, and medical education. He is the site director for the Partners Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, and is involved with teaching medical students, residents, and allied health professionals. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters related to addiction psychiatry.

Prior to obtaining her MSN, she worked as a nurse care manager in the Stimulant Treatment and Recovery Clinic (START) clinic, integrating harm reduction, infectious disease treatment, medical addiction groups, and co-management of stimulant use disorders and mental health conditions. Her clinical expertise includes harm reduction, low barrier treatment, complex care management, early identification and management of acute and persistent stimulant-induced psychosis. She earned both her BSN and MSN from Regis College.

This includes health providers in Acute Treatment Services (ATS), Crisis Stabilization Services (CSS), Transitional Support Services (TSS), Opioid Treatment Programs (OTP), long-term residential program, sober and recovery homes, primary care, and psychiatry. This free, case-based tele-mentoring program is designed to increase the capacity of health care providers to implement high-quality and evidence-based addiction treatment.

Beth Cohen, MDDr. Beth Cohen is the Medical Director of the GenderCare Center and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Dr. Cohen is a board certified endocrinologist who practices within the Endocrinology, Diabetes, Nutrition and Weight Management Department of Boston Medical Center. She specializes in gender affirming hormone therapy and care for transgender and gender diverse individuals. Additional areas of interest include the evaluation and treatment of hypogonadism (estrogen or testosterone deficiency) and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Objectives

- Describe the prevalence of use of anabolic and androgenic steroids among patients with a substance use disorder and the general population.

Kristin Parent, MA, LMHCKristin is the program director of the Stimulant Treatment and Recovery Team (START) clinic, which provides treatment for patients with stimulant use disorder. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, she also provides group therapy to patients involved in the program. As part of the Grayken Center for Addiction Training & Technical Assistance (TTA) team, she provides TTA to the three other programs in Massachusetts implementing the START model into their sites. Kristin is a graduate of Boston University’s School of Medicine, where she earned a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine, and she received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University.

- Recognize the key principles of contingency management as a treatment for stimulant use disorder.

This free, case-based tele-mentoring program is designed to increase the capacity of health care providers to implement high-quality and evidence-based addiction treatment.

Speakers
Joanna D'Afflitti, MD, MPHJoanna D’Afflitti, MD, MPH has served as Medical Director of Respite Programs at Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program since February 2021. Dually board certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine, Dr. D’Afflitti received a Master in Public Health from Columbia University in 2001 and a Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine in 2007. She completed the General Internal Medicine Residency Program at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital in 2010. After completing her residency training she served as a Primary Care Physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital Chelsea Healthcare Center from 2010-2014, where she received support from the Kraft Center for Community Health as a Kraft Practitioner to lead efforts to integrate depression and substance use screening and treatment into primary care. In 2014 she accepted the position of Associate Medical Director for Primary Care Quality and Innovation in the section of General Internal Medicine at Boston Medical Center (BMC). She worked at BMC from 2014-2021 as a primary care physician, also serving as Medical Director for the Office-Based Addiction Treatment (OBAT) program from 2018-2021.

Daniel Rodrigues, LICSW, PMH-CDaniel Rodrigues is the Director of Substance Use Disorder and Outreach Programs at Duffy Health Center located in Hyannis. Daniel’s background is as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, graduating from Smith School for Social Work in 2013. Daniel has worked in the field of substance use disorders and mental health since graduation, having worked in inpatient co-occurring treatment, outpatient residential, and hospital based Social Work on Maternity and Pediatrics, before transitioning to his current role at Duffy Health Center. In his role at Duffy, Daniel provides clinical oversight for all of the health center’s substance use disorder services, and outreach programs, as well as the center's winter weather response program.

- Participants will be able to identify the social determinants of health that impact people experiencing homelessness, and their ability to seek SUD care.
- Describe the importance of low-threshold treatment for people experiencing homelessness.
