As part of the twice-monthly SUD Care Continuum ECHO® series, Charmaine Lastimoso, FNP-C, MPH, will describe the relationship between substance use disorders and brain injuries, discuss the impact of brain injury on fundamental cognitive skills, and identify screening and treatment needs for patients with brain injury. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.
The Substance Use Disorder Care Continuum ECHO® (SUD Care Continuum ECHO®) series offers training and support in addiction treatment, with a focus on supporting front line addiction treatment workforce. This includes health providers in Acute Treatment Services (ATS), Crisis Stabilization Services (CSS), Transitional Support Services (TSS), Opioid Treatment Programs (OTP), long-term residential program, sober and recovery homes, primary care, and psychiatry. This free, case-based tele-mentoring program is designed to increase the capacity of health care providers to implement high-quality and evidence-based addiction treatment.
Intended audience
Providers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, peer supports, other clinical staff, and non-clinicians.
Speakers
Charmaine Lastimoso, FNP-C, MPHCharmaine is an assistant professor of medicine at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and a recent graduate of an adult nurse practitioner fellowship with the Harvard Medical School Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship Program. She spends most of her clinical time at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute on the inpatient palliative care consult team and the outpatient clinic, with additional rotations in community-based palliative care. She also provides transitional, low-barrier substance use disorder care at Faster Paths to Treatment, Boston Medical Center's SUD urgent care center. Charmaine was previously a Clinical Nurse Educator for BMC’s Grayken Center for Training and Technical Assistance, where she contributed to peer-reviewed publications, evidence-based clinical guidelines, development and delivery of continuing education programs, and other resources for providers supporting patients with substance use disorder. She has also worked at the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program as a respite and primary care provider and has conducted research on the healthcare needs of historically underserved populations.

Caroline Dorsen, PhD, FNP-BC, FAAN (she/her)Caroline is Associate Dean for Clinical Faculty Affairs and Clinical Professor at New York University Meyers College of Nursing. She is a scholar, educator, and family nurse practitioner whose career-long passion has been the intersection of health and social justice. For over 15 years, she has focused on the role of nursing in perpetuating and lessening health disparities and has worked to develop innovative teaching, practice, and research interventions to improve student, patient, and community outcomes. She has been a member of numerous diversity, equity, and inclusion taskforces, including for the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, and has twice been an invited speaker at the National Academy of Medicine on the role of nurses in interprofessional healthcare teams, and is a member of the Board of Directors for Community Health Network (CHN) in NYC and the Program Director for the National University Psychedelic Education Program (U-PEP).
