Description
Boston Medical Center's (BMC) 12-part Massachusetts Office Based Addiction Treatment ECHO® (MA OBAT ECHO®) offers training and support in addiction treatment, with a focus on comprehensive care for patients with substance use disorders (SUDs). The free, case-based tele-mentoring program is designed to increase the capacity of primary care teams to integrate addiction treatment using a multidisciplinary care model.
Intended audience
Providers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, peer supports, other clinical staff, and non-clinicians.
Speakers
Allyson Pinkhover, MPHAllyson Pinkhover, MPH is Director of Substance Use Services at Brockton Neighborhood Health Center where, among other things, she has began a mobile medical program, implemented drug checking via FTIR technology, supported the development of a contingency management program for people with stimulant use. She is also chair of the Holbrook Board of Health, and serves as a Subject Matter Expert for the Massachusetts Health Officers Association.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will have the knowledge to:
1) Recognize the utility of utility of drug supply testing in a community health setting.
2) Consider barriers and strategies for integrating drug supply testing.

Charmaine Lastimoso, MSN, NP-C, MPH, CARN-APCharmaine is an assistant professor of medicine at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and a recent graduate of an adult nurse practitioner fellowship with the Harvard Medical School Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship Program. She spends most of her clinical time at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute on the inpatient palliative care consult team and the outpatient clinic, with additional rotations in community-based palliative care. She also provides transitional, low-barrier substance use disorder care at Faster Paths to Treatment, Boston Medical Center's SUD urgent care center. Charmaine was previously a Clinical Nurse Educator for BMC’s Grayken Center for Training and Technical Assistance, where she contributed to peer-reviewed publications, evidence-based clinical guidelines, development and delivery of continuing education programs, and other resources for providers supporting patients with substance use disorder. She has also worked at the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program as a respite and primary care provider and has conducted research on the healthcare needs of historically underserved populations.

Megan Gerber, MD, MPH, FACPDr. Gerber is division chief of General Internal Medicine. She sees adult patients at Albany Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Group and also serves as vice chair of the Department of Medicine for Faculty Development. As an internal medicine physician, Dr. Gerber diagnoses and treats common medical problems and chronic illnesses in patients aged 18 years and older. She has a special interest in women’s health and in trauma-informed care, which takes trauma and adverse childhood experiences into account as part of a holistic approach to medical care.

Beth Cohen, MDDr. Beth Cohen is the Medical Director of the GenderCare Center and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Dr. Cohen is a board certified endocrinologist who practices within the Endocrinology, Diabetes, Nutrition and Weight Management Department of Boston Medical Center. She specializes in gender affirming hormone therapy and care for transgender and gender diverse individuals. Additional areas of interest include the evaluation and treatment of hypogonadism (estrogen or testosterone deficiency) and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Alexis Gallardo Foreman, DNP, MSN, FNP-BC, TTSDr. Alexis Gallardo Foreman is a nurse practitioner and assistant professor of pulmonology, allergy, sleep and critical care at the Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine. Among other things, her work has focused on hospital-wide efforts at Boston Medical Center to reduce readmissions of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease through the creation of educational resources for inhaler teaching and nicotine replacement therapies for patients at the bedside and post-discharge.
Cornelia Wakeman, NPCornelia Wakeman is a nurse practitioner in Boston Medical Center’s pulmonary department and is also co-director of the Tobacco Treatment Program at Boston Medical center. Her clinical interests include working with patient populations who experience substance use and tobacco use disorders as well as developing tailored interventions to reach socioeconomically disadvantaged populations and reduce health care disparities.

Boston Medical Center's (BMC) 12-part Massachusetts Office Based Addiction Treatment ECHO® (MA OBAT ECHO®) offers training and support in addiction treatment, with a focus on comprehensive care for patients with substance use disorders (SUDs). The free, case-based tele-mentoring program is designed to increase the capacity of primary care teams to integrate addiction treatment using a multidisciplinary care model.

Speakers
Elisabeth Woodhams, MD, MScDr Woodhams is the Division Director of Family Planning, as well as the Program Director for the Fellowship in Complex Family Planning, and the Medical Director of Ambulatory Services for the Department of OBGYN. She is an avid research collaborator, having been co-PI on several NICHD Complex Contraceptive Trials Network tasks. She is a national leader in understanding and studying substance use disorder and addiction for patients undergoing abortion. Her research interests include the intersection of substance used disorder and reproductive health, abortion service delivery improvement, and patient centered service delivery in reproductive health care.
Objectives

- Describe the unique barriers patients with SUD seeking contraception face.
- Review how contraceptive methods may or may not intersect with elements of SUD/OUD.

She completed her internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and her fellowship in addiction medicine at Boston Medical Center. Since 2022, she has been working at BMC providing primary care and addiction care in multiple settings including via a low-barrier bridge clinic and an inpatient addiction consult team. Her clinical interests include low-barrier addiction treatment, and the integration of addiction treatment into primary care, HIV primary care, pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV, and primary care for patients who have experienced incarceration.

Joji Suzuki, MDDr. Suzuki is the Director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry and Director of Addictions Education in the Department of Psychiatry, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. His areas of clinical and research interests are the assessment and management of substance use disorders and related conditions in general medical settings, motivational interviewing, office-based opioid treatment, implementation of collaborative models of care, and medical education. He is the site director for the Partners Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, and is involved with teaching medical students, residents, and allied health professionals. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters related to addiction psychiatry.
