Description

The training is designed to be a guide for addiction providers interested in providing and caring for people who use stimulants, including cocaine and methamphetamines. The training will review the basic science of addiction related to stimulants as well as evidence-based treatment for people who use stimulants. The session will also talk about the practical implementation of evidence-based treatment for patients who use stimulants in the office-based addiction treatment setting.

Please note that you must have your camera turned on so we can see you during the training in order to be eligible for CEUs.

Intended audience

Physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, recovery coaches, and all other healthcare professionals treating addiction are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Speakers

Vanessa Loukas, MSN, FNP-C, CARN-AP

Vanessa is a Clinical Nurse Educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction Technical Assistance Team with clinical interest and expertise in management of substance use disorders in primary care, chronic mental illness, and infectious diseases. She is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner receiving her Masters of Science in Nursing at Simmons College, and board certified in Advance Practice Addictions nursing through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board (CARN-AP). Prior to joining the team, she was the Administrative Director of the Addiction Services Department at East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, formerly the South End Community Health Center, developing their multidisciplinary nursing led addiction program and where she practiced as a nurse practitioner managing a high risk patient panel. Vanessa also worked as a registered nurse in acute treatment services and medical stabilization programs.

Annie Potter, MSN, MPH, NP, CARN-AP

Annie is a Nurse Practitioner at Boston Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Annie educates and supports health care providers on best practices in the treatment of substance use disorders and serves as the Medical Director for the Massachusetts Office Based Addiction Treatment ECHO. Prior to joining BMC, Annie practiced at a community health center in Baltimore, MD, where she established and served as the clinical lead for the city's first walk-in HIV treatment and prevention program. She is board-certified in addictions and holds specialty certifications for the treatment of HIV and Hepatitis C. Annie earned her Masters of Nursing and Masters of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and Bloomberg School of Public Health, respectively.

Objectives

Following this training, participants will have the knowledge necessary to:

• Identify the role of psychostimulants in the overdose epidemic and recognize population disparities.
• Describe the impact of stigma associated with stimulant use disorder (StUD).
• Recognize two risk factors for developing StUD and understand the neurobiological changes associated with stimulant use.
• Describe overamping and management of acute stimulant intoxication.
• Identify health risks associated with stimulant use and apply harm reduction interventions.
• Understand interventions to treat acute stimulant intoxication and long term treatment including de-escalation and behavioral interventions.
• Understand the essentials of integrating stimulant treatment into outpatient addiction treatment.
