This course will prepare nurses and other key members of the multidisciplinary care team to deliver medication for addiction treatment (MAT) such as buprenorphine and naltrexone using a chronic care management model. Topics covered will include the science of addiction as a brain disorder, the pharmacotherapy of medications used to treat opioid and alcohol use disorders (current standard of care), and practical tools for implementing these treatment modalities into an office-based setting and for supporting physicians or other clinicians as part of a care team. Attendees will learn to screen patients for substance use disorders, initiate medication, and provide ongoing care and counseling. Check-in for the course will be from 8:00 to 8:30 am and the training will run from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
For this training, there is pre-work that we are requesting participants complete in advance. For all attendees, we strongly recommend completing the pre-work. The pre-work is the foundation for the work we will do together at the training; we cannot stress enough the importance of reviewing the material ahead of time. The learner will: Define opioid use disorder, Explain methods used to evaluate patients for treatment with buprenorphine, injectable naltrexone. Identify the clinically relevant pharmacological characteristics of buprenorphine and buprenorphine/naloxone, Outline tools for monitoring and supporting patients engaged in Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT).

Boston Medical Center grants 7.7 nursing contact hours to nurses who complete this program. You must stay for the entire program and complete this evaluation form. This program has no commercial support. Faculty and planners have no vested interests and there are no conflicts of interest. There will be no discussion of off label uses of drugs. Boston Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by American Nurses Association, Massachusetts, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. Social Work Accreditation: Title: Essentials of OBAT Auth#: B-20-008 Continuing Education Credits approved: 7.5 Expires: September 30, 2020 This course is not a waiver training. Essentials of OBAT credit hours cannot be used to fulfill the training requirements for obtaining a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine.
