Description

Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction TTA is pleased to announce a comprehensive new training series aimed at advancing addiction treatment among health care professionals. This recurring series consists of 16 hours of training covering 20 topics. You can attend all sessions or select specific ones. 
 
Foundational topics in this series include an introduction to substance use disorders (SUDs) and stigma, screening for SUDs, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Clinically-focused sessions will review alcohol, benzodiazepine, and stimulant use disorders, in addition to MOUD implementation strategies, co-occurring disorders, and medical considerations for persons using substances. Population-specific trainings will discuss SUD as it relates to adolescents and young adults, older adults, peripartum persons, and those with a brain injury. Specialty topics include cannabis, criminal-legal involvement, overdose education and naloxone distribution, pain management, lab testing/toxicology screening, and regulatory issues relating to MOUD. 
 

These trainings, formerly used for advanced practice providers (APPs) applying for their DEA X-waiver, will continue to count towards the additional 16 hours required for APPs. 

Please note that you must have your camera on so we can see you in order to be eligible for continuing education credits and for this training to count towards your 16 hour X-Waiver requirement.

Speakers

Justin Alves, RN, MSN, ACRN, CARN, CNE

Justin is a Clinical Nurse Educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction TTA team, with specific expertise in infectious disease and their co-occurrence with substance use disorders, community outreach, and harm reduction. He serves as an expert on Grayken TTA's SUD Care Continuum ECHO team and sits on the item writing committee for the Addictions Nursing Certification Board. Justin has dedicated his career to caring for patients living with HIV/AIDS and suffering from substance use disorders across the continuum of care. He is an AIDS Certified Registered Nurse, a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse, and a member of the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. Justin received his BSN from Northeastern University in 2013 and received his MSN, with a focus in nursing education, from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in 2020.

Annie Potter, MSN, MPH, NP, CARN-AP

Annie is a Nurse Practitioner at Boston Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Annie educates and supports health care providers on best practices in the treatment of substance use disorders and serves as the Medical Director for the Massachusetts Office Based Addiction Treatment ECHO. Prior to joining BMC, Annie practiced at a community health center in Baltimore, MD, where she established and served as the clinical lead for the city's first walk-in HIV treatment and prevention program. She is board-certified in addictions and holds specialty certifications for the treatment of HIV and Hepatitis C. Annie earned her Masters of Nursing and Masters of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and Bloomberg School of Public Health, respectively.

Objectives

Following completion of this training, participants will have the knowledge necessary to:

• Recognize the spectrum of substance use
• Identify the major neurobiological responses to substances
• Recall basic epidemiology and public health impact of substance use 
• Explain how chronic disease management applies to addiction
• Describe the importance of utilizing medically-accurate language for substance use disorder
