BMC Grayken Center for Addiction TTA is offering a FREE exam review course for RNs and APRNs working in the addiction field interested in becoming a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) or a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse - Advanced Practice (CARN-AP). This course is intended to support nurses studying for the CARN and CARN-AP exams by reviewing the material the exam will cover. Eligibility criteria for the CARN and CARN-AP certifications can be found on CNET’S website https://www.cnetnurse.com/carn-exam 

THIS TRAINING IS BEING HELD VIA ZOOM TELECONFERENCING TECHNOLOGY. To receive CE credit, you must register through this page, fully attend both Parts 1 & 2, and complete the post-training evaluation. The CE can be used toward credits needed in addictions to sit for the exam. 

Intended audience

Registered Nurses (RNs) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) with experience treating patients with addiction who intend to sit for the CARN or CARN-AP exam.

Speakers

Judith Austin, MSN, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP (she/her)

Judith is a Clinical Educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction TTA program, teaching the Addiction Nursing Certification Review course. In addition, Judith works at an inpatient substance use disorder treatment facility, has a private practice, and is the playwright and performer of a one-woman show entitled Spiro Spero, a play about addiction, utilizing art to promote education and awareness surrounding addiction at various colleges, nursing and medical schools, and conferences. 

Vanessa Loukas, MSN, FNP-C, CARN-AP (she/her)

Vanessa is a clinical nurse educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance, an assistant professor of medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, and a nurse practitioner at Boston Medical Center. She has expertise in managing substance use disorders, co-occurring psychiatric conditions, and infectious diseases in primary care settings. Her clinical interests include harm reduction, low-barrier treatment, medical addiction groups, and improving care for persons involved in the criminal-legal system. Through her primary role on the Grayken TTA team, Vanessa contributes to peer-reviewed publications, evidence-based clinical guidelines, development and delivery of continuing education programs, and other resources for providers supporting patients with substance use disorders. Prior to joining the Grayken TTA team, Vanessa practiced as a nurse practitioner and was the program director for the addiction treatment program at the South End Community Health Center, caring for high-risk patients with substance use disorders and psychiatric diagnoses. Her work integrated harm reduction, on-demand treatment, infectious disease treatment, and medical addiction groups including within the male/female re-entry/recovery units at the Suffolk County House of Corrections. Vanessa received her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Simmons University and is a Certified Addiction Registered Nurse – Advanced Practice (CARN-AP) through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board (ANCB).

Objectives

By the end of this certification review program, participants will have the knowledge necessary to:

• Identify the major categories of substances of misuse, including neurobiology, intoxication, withdrawal, and treatment.
• Explain methods used to identify, assess, and implement care for patients with substance use and addiction disorders.
• Identify the clinically relevant pharmacological characteristics of medications and medical interventions used to manage substance withdrawal, acute intoxication, and treatment.
• Outline tools and evidenced-based practices for monitoring and supporting patients with substance use and process addictions.
• Apply nursing process in identifying, planning, assessing, and implementing care plans for patients with substance use disorder and process addictions.
• Have a basic understanding of therapeutic interventions and how to apply them for the treatment of substance disorders and process addictions.
• Navigate ethical dilemmas related to substance use disorder in nursing.

Accreditation information

Boston Medical Center grants 7.25 hours, 2.00 of which are classified as pharmacology hours, to all nurses who attend both parts of the training and complete the evaluation. Boston Medical Center is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Association, Massachusetts, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Continuing education (CE) requirements vary by license and jurisdiction. When requesting continuing education credits, please ensure you are following the rules and regulations determined by the board regulating your license. Boston Medical Center Grayken Center for Addiction TTA does not oversee adherence to licensing requirements and regulations.
