Description

The Center for Nursing Education and Testing's (C-NET's) Item Writing Workshop is a 90-minute virtual workshop in which participants will learn to write test questions for the CARN and CARN-AP certification examinations. The team will address the complete process of developing a certification examination and the principles of item writing and test construction, including tips for writing good items. These skills can be used in a wide variety of situations where nursing knowledge is measured since the principles apply to teacher-made tests in nursing education programs, continuing education programs, and staff development programs. Item writing is a unique process that combines creativity and adherence to the rules and imposed editorial standards. Participants will have a post-workshop assignment to submit three (3) of their own items - written to the standards/principles taught in the workshop - to receive a total of 3 continuing education contact hours.

Speakers

Andrew Karle, ICE-CCP

Andrew Karle, BSEd, is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for C-NET and is responsible for supervising C-NET's daily operations and handling information technology services, which includes acting as the primary liaison between C-NET and PSI, C-NET’s partner test center company. Mr. Karle directly supports the C-NET President with existing projects, directly interacts with clients and vendors, and assists with new product development, test construction, and data analysis. Before taking on his role as COO, he was the Director of Pre-Professional Testing, where he supervised the development and administration of the school line of tests and co-authored the Study Guide for the Pre-Nursing Assessment Test-PN and various other practice tests. Mr. Karle graduated cum laude from Kent State University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in English and Communications, and became an I.C.E. Certified Credentialing Professional (ICE-CCP™) in 2023. Prior to his employment at C-NET, he taught high school English in Elizabeth City, NC.

Following this workshop, participants will have the knowledge to:

• Describe the principles of item writing.
• List the components of the certification process.
• Analyze, edit, and create high level test questions.

Accreditation information

REQUIREMENTS for credit

1. Register for training.
2. Arrive/log into the training no more than 10 minutes after designated start time for program.
3. Identify yourself by typing your full name into the chat and ensuring your Zoom name matches that used to register for training (or you cannot be marked on attendance).
4. Be present through the end of the activity (i.e., until the designated end time of training).
5. Complete and submit the post-evaluation within 2 weeks of program completion.
6. Write and submit three (3) test questions that meet the standards discussed in the training. Each test question must contain a rationale, citation and answer bank with the correct answer noted.

Please note this policy is strictly enforced for accreditation purposes. Participants will forfeit collection of credit and certificates of completion if more than 10 minutes of the training is missed.

Nursing

Boston Medical Center is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Association Massachusetts, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Participants who stay for the entire session and complete and return the evaluation and the homework assignment within two weeks of the program date will be awarded 3.00 contact hours.
