Description

OBAT TTA+ and Spectrum Health Systems, Inc. are partnering to provide a series on addiction treatment in the Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) setting. This series will have six sessions covering a variety of topics that are offered twice.

This 1.5 hour session, titled “Women's Treatment Needs and Gender Responsive Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder” will be a presentation on how to manage and treat patients who are women in the OTP setting.

This training will be held via Zoom. We would prefer that you log in using a computer with a web cam so that we can all connect to each other via video. Please note that signing on with video is required to receive CEs. If you do not have access to a web cam, please let us know.

OTP and OBAT staff providing treatment for substance use disorders in Massachusetts.

 

Speakers

Miriam Harris, MD, MSc

Dr. Harris is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and an addiction expert at Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine. She attended McMaster University Medical School and completed her internal medicine residency at the University of British Columbia. She completed her first fellowship in general Internal medicine at McGill University, where she also completed a master's in epidemiology. She came to Boston from Canada to complete an addiction medicine fellowship at Boston University. Dr. Harris’s research interests focus on the intersection of women’s health and addiction including: enhancing services for sex workers, substance use in pregnancy, gender-responsive harm reduction, and increasing sexual, reproductive, and HIV prevention services in substance use treatment spaces.
Clinically, she provides primary care and office-based addiction treatment in the Women’s Health Unit at Boston Medical Center and attends on the General Medicine units and the Addiction Consult Service at Boston Medical Center.

Objectives

• Identify the different pathways in which women may enter treatment in the OTP setting. 
• Recognize comprehensive health care services offered in the OTP setting that take into account the gender-specific needs of women.
• Recommend strategies to accommodate women receiving care in the OTP setting who are primary caregivers to a child or other dependent. 
• Propose strategies to address issues associated with trauma and violence experienced by women who receive treatment in the OTP setting.
