Description

This training will review strategies to engage with patients who actively use substances including harm reduction services, linkage to care, and strategies for de-escalation. Particular emphasis will be placed on strategies for patients who are experiencing acute symptoms of stimulant intoxication.

To be eligible for CEUs, you must have your camera turned on so we can see you during the training.

Speakers

Justin Alves, RN, MSN, ACRN, CARN, CNE

Justin is a Clinical Nurse Educator for Boston Medical Center's OBAT TTA team, with specific expertise in infectious disease and their co-occurrence with substance use disorders, community outreach, and harm reduction. He serves as an expert on OBAT TTA's SUD Care Continuum ECHO team and sits on the item writing committee for the Addictions Nursing Certification Board. Justin has dedicated his career to caring for patients living with HIV/AIDS and suffering from substance use disorders across the continuum of care. He is an AIDS Certified Registered Nurse, a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse, and a member of the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. Justin received his BSN from Northeastern University in 2013 and received his MSN, with a focus in nursing education, from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in 2020.

Andrea Jodat, DNP, FNP-BC, CARN-AP

Andrea is a Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Educator for the OBAT TTA Program at Boston Medical Center with clinical interest and expertise in women's health, individuals experiencing homelessness, and chronic disease management. She is committed to serving vulnerable populations and works per diem at Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program; Andrea has also conducted international healthcare work in Haiti. She is a term lecturer and preceptor for nurse practitioner students at the MGH Institute of Health Professions (MGH IHP). Andrea received her Masters of Science in Nursing in 2011 and her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2018, both from the MGH IHP. She is board certified in addictions nursing through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board.

Objectives

After attending this training, participants will:

• Describe the epidemiology of stimulant use in the United States and the corresponding risk of psychostimulant overdose. 
• Identify the signs and symptoms of overamping. 
• Name the 5 Ds of risks associated with the occurrence of overamping. 
• Apply the AGRO+ de-escalation strategy for patients experiencing overamping. 
• Identify strategies to reduce the risks of overamping as well as contingency plans for what to do if overamping should occur.

Accreditation information

Boston Medical Center grants 1.50 hours to all nurses who attend and complete the evaluation. Boston Medical Center is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by American Nurses Association, Massachusetts, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The lecture has been approved by The Network of Professional Education at Boston University School of Social Work, accredited by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Social Work Registration, to provide 1.50 credit hours. 

BMC Grayken Center of Addiction TTA has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7188. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. BMC Grayken Center of Addiction TTA is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. For this program, 1.50 contact hours will be offered to participants who attend the training and complete the evaluation.
