Description

Boston Medical Center's (BMC) drop-in series Substance Use Disorder Care Continuum ECHO® (SUD Care Continuum ECHO®) offers training and support in addiction treatment, with a focus on supporting front line addiction treatment workforce. This includes health providers in Acute Treatment Services (ATS), Crisis Stabilization Services (CSS), Transitional Support Services (TSS), Opioid Treatment Programs (OTP), long-term residential program, sober and recovery homes, primary care, and psychiatry. This free, case-based tele-mentoring program is designed to increase the capacity of health care providers to implement high-quality and evidence-based addiction treatment.

Intended audience

Providers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, peer supports, other clinical staff, and non-clinicians.

Speakers

Daniel P. Alford, MD, MPH (he/him)

Daniel P. Alford, MD, MPH, is a board-certified primary care physician at Boston Medical Center (BMC), where he specializes in managing opioid use disorders and safer opioid prescribing. He is also a professor of medicine and associate dean of continuing medical education at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and the director of the Clinical Addiction Research and Education (CARE) Unit at BMC. Dr. Alford has been recognized as a Champion of Change by the White House and has received the American Medical Association’s Award for Health Education, among other honors.

Emily Hurstak, MD, MPH (she/her)

Dr. Emily Hurstak is the medical director of Boston Medical Center's Office Based Addiction Clinic (OBAT) and Grayken Center for Addiction TTA's SUD Care Continuum ECHO®. She is a primary care physician and addiction medicine specialist who provides primary medical care to patients at Boston Medical Center's General Internal Medicine and OBAT clinics. Dr. Hurstak has focused her work and research on improving the understanding and care of patients with co-morbid substance use disorders and chronic pain as well as studying health literacy and health communication techniques to improve care of vulnerable patients. She is board certified in internal medicine and addiction medicine and is trained in medical acupuncture. Dr. Hurstak received her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Columbia University and completed her residency, chief residency, and fellowship at the University of California San Francisco.

Objectives

Following this training, participants will have the knowledge to:

• Describe the prevalence of chronic pain among patients with substance use disorders (SUD).
• Describe how chronic pain impacts recovery outcomes.
• Learn about novel methods to improve pain care for patients with SUD.

REQUIREMENTS for credit

1. Register for training.
2. Arrive/log into the Zoom meeting with the same email address associated with your addictiontraining.org user account no more than 10 minutes after designated start time for program.
3. Identify yourself by typing your full name into the chat and ensuring your zoom name matches that used to register for training (or you cannot be marked on attendance).
4. Be present through the end of the activity (i.e. until the designated end time of training).
5. Complete evaluation within 2 weeks of program completion.

Please note this policy is strictly enforced for accreditation purposes. Participants will forfeit collection of credit and certificates of completion if more than 10 minutes of the training is missed.

Nursing

Nursing Contact Hours: 1.00 number of contact hours of which 0.00 are eligible for pharmacology credit.

Social Work

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 1.00 clinical continuing education credits.

American Psychological Association (APA) CE Designation Statement

Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs. 

New York State Psychology Credit

Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine Barry M. Manuel Center for Continuing Education is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0181. Note: NYS psychologists must attend all sessions for credit. Partial credit is not allowed.            

The Department’s approval of a provider of continuing education does not constitute the Department’s endorsement of the content, positions or practices that may be addressed in any specific continuing education course offered by the approved provider

LMHC

BMC Grayken Center of Addiction TTA has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7188. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. BMC Grayken Center of Addiction TTA is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. For this program, 1.00 contact hours will be offered to participants who attend the training and complete the evaluation.

LADC/CADC & Recovery Coach

Boston Medical Center Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (DPH/BSAS) to award LADC/CADC and Recovery Coaches who complete this trainings 1.00 continuing education credits.
