This month, we will be joined by Steven Shoptaw, PhD, one of the co-authors of the article, to review and discuss "Mirtazapine for Methamphetamine Use Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial" by McKetin R, Shoptaw S, Saunders L, et al.

Addiction Journal Club (AJC) is a monthly session where we meet to review an evidence-based, open-access article and discuss its implications for substance use disorder (SUD) practice. This includes new research and landmark studies relevant to SUD practice. AJC is distinct from other BMC Grayken Center for Addiction TTA events; it is designed to be less didactic and more of an interactive review of emerging data and trends related to caring for persons who use substances. It is also a great opportunity to network with addiction colleagues and share experiences about clinical practices.

Steven Shoptaw, PhD, is the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Family Medicine and a Professor in Family Medicine as well as in Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. He directs three centers at UCLA: the Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine (CBAM), the NIMH-funded P30 AIDS Research Center, and the Center for HIV Identification, Prevention, and Treatment Services (CHIPTS). He also co-directs the Big South/West Node of NIDA’s Clinical Trials Network. Dr. Shoptaw utilizes these platforms to lead research, clinical, and policy efforts aimed at delivering novel and high-impact strategies to provide culturally competent care and prevention for individuals affected by addictions and HIV. He offers mentorship to clinical and research scholars from diverse backgrounds in the U.S., Vietnam, South Africa, Australia, and Cameroon.
