Topic: Pain
This training will cover the impact of hyperalgesia and cross tolerance on acute pain among patients with opioid dependence and/or who are on medications for opioid use disorder. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for acute pain management will be discussed. Participants will acquire tools for devising pain-management plans for planned and unanticipated acute pain experiences for patients on medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD).

As part of the twice-monthly MA OBAT ECHO® series, Stephen Holt, MD, MS, FACP, FASAM, will review medications for outpatient management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome, the signs and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal syndrome, and how to identify appropriate candidates for outpatient management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.

Topic: Buprenorphine
This training is designed to provide foundational knowledge and skills in initiating buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder in the outpatient setting in the context of the widespread presence of illicitly manufactured fentanyl. We explore how the potency and prevalence of fentanyl complicates the initiation phase of buprenorphine treatment, leading to potential clinical challenges such as precipitated withdrawal. We suggest participating in the next training in the series, Buprenorphine 201, upon completing Buprenorphine 101.
