Participants will explore evidence-informed strategies to reduce risks and support safer patterns of use among patients with co-occurring alcohol and cocaine consumption. The session emphasizes the biochemical process of transesterification and the clinical impact of cocaethylene on health outcomes. Participants will also review policy-level approaches that mitigate risks and examine comprehensive treatment strategies, including pharmacotherapy and behavioral interventions, for managing co-occurring alcohol and cocaine use disorders.

As part of the twice-monthly MA OBAT ECHO® series, Alysse Wurcel, MD, will describe the physical and mental health needs of incarcerated populations, with emphasis on substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions, and examine barriers and strategies for supporting individuals with addiction during transitions between jail, prison, and community-based treatment. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.

Substance-related deaths continue to rise, leaving families, friends, and communities to cope with profound grief that is often complicated by stigma, trauma, and a lack of support. This training is designed for healthcare workers and community members who support individuals and families impacted by such loss. Through a trauma-informed and empathetic lens, participants will explore the unique emotional complexities surrounding substance-related bereavement. The session will offer practical tools and evidence-based interventions to help providers engage compassionately with those grieving, while also connecting them to meaningful community and clinical resources. This training emphasizes the importance of reducing stigma, fostering healing, and enhancing the role of healthcare providers in postvention support.
