This training supports youth-facing providers and care teams. Utilizing didactic discussion, we will describe the prevalence of youth substance use (SU) and emerging trends, paying specific attention to common substances, such as nicotine, cannabis and alcohol. We will review youth-specific risks of SU, including acute and chronic harms; discuss overdose education and naloxone; and highlight communication tools that support working with youth who use substances.

The session emphasizes the mental health impacts of co-ingestion and examines how these effects influence clinical care. Participants will also review policy-level approaches that reduce associated risks and learn comprehensive treatment strategies, including pharmacotherapy and behavioral interventions, for managing co-occurring alcohol and methamphetamine use disorders.

As part of the twice-monthly MA OBAT ECHO® series, Joanna D'Afflitti, MD, MPH, will identify issues where preventative health screening and education may benefit patients in addiction treatment and describe communication strategies for educating patients about and engaging patients in preventative treatments. This training aims to enhance participants' understanding of tobacco and nicotine use, focusing on key aspects of nicotine use disorder. Participants will gain insights into the prevalence of tobacco and nicotine use in the United States, learn to recognize common symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, and explore management strategies for these symptoms. Additionally, the training covers two evidence-based treatments for nicotine use disorder and explains how nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) formulations and dosages can be tailored based on an individual’s nicotine use patterns.
