This training provides an overview of cannabis use trends in the United States and explores both the potential risks and benefits of cannabis use in the adult population. Participants will learn to identify key symptoms of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome and gain insight into strategies for managing cannabis dependency and withdrawal.

Topic: Buprenorphine
This training is designed to provide foundational knowledge and skills in initiating buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder in the outpatient setting in the context of the widespread presence of illicitly manufactured fentanyl. We explore how the potency and prevalence of fentanyl complicates the initiation phase of buprenorphine treatment, leading to potential clinical challenges such as precipitated withdrawal. We suggest participating in the next training in the series, Buprenorphine 201, upon completing Buprenorphine 101.

The course is intended to support nurses studying for the certification exam by reviewing content covered in the exam and providing additional educational resources relevant to the exam.

Topic: Pain
This training will cover the impact of hyperalgesia and cross tolerance on chronic pain among patients with opioid dependence and/or who are on medications for opioid use disorder. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for chronic pain management will be discussed. Participants will acquire tools for identifying pain severity and evaluating opioid use disorder in patients on chronic opioid therapy.

As part of the twice-monthly SUD Care Continuum ECHO® series, Tae Woo (Ted) Park, MD, will discuss benzodiazepine pharmacology and associated risks, particularly when combined with other substances, and develop skills to identify, assess, and manage benzodiazepine use and withdrawal in patients with substance use disorders. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.

Additionally, we will examine evidence-based interventions to treat alcohol use disorders and support individuals in their recovery.

As part of the twice-monthly SUD Care Continuum ECHO® series, Alexis Gallardo Foreman, DNP, MSN, FNP-BC, TTS & Cornelia Wakeman, NP, will describe current patterns, health risks, and drivers of e-cigarette use among adults, including co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions, and apply evidence-based, patient-centered strategies to assess readiness, counsel adults on vaping cessation or reduction, and integrate pharmacologic and behavioral supports into routine clinical care. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.
