Topic: Kratom
This training aims to increase learners’ understanding of kratom prevalence, misuse patterns, and clinical management. The activity provides evidence-based content that enables healthcare providers to accurately characterize kratom use, recognize signs and symptoms of kratom intoxication and withdrawal, and understand associated health risks. Improved knowledge is expected to reduce under-recognition of kratom-related concerns and promote more informed, consistent, and patient-centered care across interprofessional practice settings.

Substance-related deaths continue to rise, leaving families, friends, and communities to cope with profound grief that is often complicated by stigma, trauma, and a lack of support. This training is designed for healthcare workers and community members who support individuals and families impacted by such loss. Through a trauma-informed and empathetic lens, participants will explore the unique emotional complexities surrounding substance-related bereavement. The session will offer practical tools and evidence-based interventions to help providers engage compassionately with those grieving, while also connecting them to meaningful community and clinical resources. This training emphasizes the importance of reducing stigma, fostering healing, and enhancing the role of healthcare providers in postvention support.

As part of the twice-monthly MA OBAT ECHO® series, Charmaine Lastimoso, MSN, NP-C, MPH, CARN-AP, will describe the relationship between substance use disorders and brain injuries. She will also recognize the impact of brain injury on fundamental cognitive skills and identify screening and treatment needs for patients with brain injury. The didactic session will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant, along with recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.
